Each year approximately 2,400 New Zealand women and approximately 20 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. For every person who is diagnosed, other people are affected including husbands, wives, partners, children, family, and friends. Over a year, this adds up to thousands of people affected.

Early detection is the best way to ensure that you and your loved ones survive breast cancer. With a family history, I have been getting the squash test for a few years now. Women between 45 and 69 years of age are entitled to (and encouraged to take) free breast checks through the National screening programme (for further details and to register check out Breastscreen Aotearoa website)
We have a varied collection of resources at the Rodney Libraries for those wanting to know more about breast health. A subject search in our catalogue will reveal many different options and types of books. Whether you are looking specifically at the health aspects or looking for biographies from NZ survivors or just the subject in general, you should be able to find something at the library.
