I spent Saturday running around farmland and trekking through mud just so I could put a little electronic chip into something that went "beep". Yes, I participated in my very first adventure/orienteering/rogaine event. It was a mixture of walking and mountain biking plus mystery activities which could earn you a few extra points.
I realised during the event that I possibly should have done a bit more homework rather than relying on luck and enthusiasm to get me through. To that end, I've been having a quick look on the catalogue.
Rodney Libraries has a few books on the subject of Orienteering (around 796.5) in the Adult Information area. There are fewer books on Adventure Racing but it does include one on the Coast to Coast, probably New Zealands best known adventure race. A book on Map Reading would have been very useful as would one on dominos. I could (should) have improved my Mountain Biking skills before the event. The only book I couldn't find was one on how to get through knee-deep mud effectively - perhaps because you can't?
