hello!!..libraries have for generations been quiet places for reading, studying, and choosing books to read elsewhere..
appearently it is now 'council policy' to allow dancing,singing, and noisy activites in libraries, disrupting other library users who may actually be there to study for papers etc,or to actually read books!..
community centres have been created for these sort of group get togethers. playcentres can hold these sorts of funfilled activities..why are these places not utilized more by the council??
it also was a policy that children under a certain age had to be supervised by an adult while in a library..it has now become a good place to drop off the kids while you go and do the shopping.meanwhile library users have to put up with older children running around playing tag running into people & knocking things over,playing their ipods,eating,fight & arguing while playing boardgames,totally disregarding other library users.
staff do nothing to control this problem,they shrug their shoulders.when staff have to yell at you over the desk because of the noise level,there is a problem with the 'policy'!.
why are children using the library not taught to be respectful,mindful and considerate to other people who are also using the library premises?
no wonder society is going downhill. no respect is taught anywhere.
Thanks for your comment. The way Libraries are used has changed over the years as the demands of customers has changed. School holiday programme fulfil one of our vision statements "Rodney Libraries inspire, engage and inform communities by providing spaces for community contact, reading, the exploration of ideas and study." During the school holidays the library staff provide programmes for children that extend the concept of a library as just a place for books - it's also a place for community. It's appropriate for the library to hold these programmes in the library itself rather than using an external venue. Our in-house programmes receive excellent feedback from people who attend them. They are valued by parents, children and other members of the community.
It is still a policy that children under a certain age are supervised by an adult while in the library. I will pass your comment onto team leaders and remind them of our responsibilities in this area.
