Are You 1 in 100?

It is thought that 1 in every 100 New Zealanders suffers from some form of Coeliac disease. However 4 out of 5 don't realise and therefore their suffering is unnecessary.
24th to 30th May is Coeliac Awareness week. Coeliac Disease is a medical condition and a permanent intestinal intolerance to gluten
found in wheat, barley, rye and for some Coeliacs, oats. If a Coeliac eats food containing gluten they can experience such reactions as upset stomach, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, mouth ulcers, chronic diarrhoea and allergic reactions. Coeliacs must stick to a
strict gluten free diet for life. If Coeliac disease is untreated, there is an increased risk of gastrointestinal malignancy, together with other health problems.

Kumeu Library has coeliac awareness display (including a very well stocked kitchen table) put together with the help of one of their customers, Lee Mckeown. Lee featured recently on the front page of their local paper, The Norwest. The display (check out the photo) includes posters, information and products available for coeliacs and books we have in the library on the subject. We have a range of books in all the Rodney libraries dealing with this issue from those dealing with the medical issues to recipe books for all people with food intolerences. Click on the Rodney Library catalogue link for details.

In conjunction with this, Lee is also holding a meeting in Huapai on June 8 for people wanting to know more about coeliac. Her phone number is 09 4128962 for anyone who wants more information.

This is a message for Lee McKeown - do you suffer from Coeliacs? My father, aunt and myself all suffer - we are all McKeowns. My friend's mother's mother was a McKeown and her cousin (on that side of the family) has just been diagnosed with Coeliac - I am starting to think this is more than a coincidence?
