The long tedious car trip ... with kids

It's hot - it's humid. You are sitting inside a moving vehicle (make that a slowly moving vehicle as there are thousands of other vehicles on the road), with restless children and toddlers. "Are we there yet?" is becoming rather boring. And you are trapped because you are still only half-way there (not that you would tell the kids that).

WE HAVE THE ANSWER (well at least it's worth a try).

Audio books and tapes are not just for adults. There are talking books and stories for childrens and teens to cover all ages.

Many of the popular children's authors are now available in this format including Roald Dahl, Jacqueline Wilson, Anthony Horowitz and Paul Jennings. There are also great books such as the BBC production Across the Barricades (Joan Lingard) about two young people from different sides of the street in the city of Belfast or A Horse called Elvis (John Heffernan) about a foal that becomes part of a family that is going through it's own turmoil and struggle to stay together.

One of my favourites is the Don Linden Children's Favourites collection. All the stories I remember from the Sunday morning Request sessions such as Little Toot, Sparky, Diana and the Golden Apple and The Littlest Angel are here (I know - I am showing my age).

Or try the music tapes and CD's with popular Wiggles, Hooley Dooleys, Hi-Five, Play School, Pukeko Stomp and others. Mothers in the know recommend that you get more than one CD or tape, otherwise you can get very sick of hearing the same songs over and over (and over) again.

We also have lots of kits with the book and the tape/CD in it so the child can read the story while they are listening to it. The Christmas Kitten by New Zealand storyteller Mary Kippenberger (who visited us a couple of years ago for our Summer Reading Programme finale parties) is a lovely tale as is The Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.
