I can read, I can READ, I CAN READ!

Well you would bloody hope so since I am a librarian but what I'm really getting at is that I have finished NaNoWriMo for another year.  52,371 words submitted and validated.

And 2 days early I might add.

Yes, Yes, Yes.

I can finally get into the ever increasing pile of books that has been giving me accusing looks for the past 30 days.  So much so that I swear they have been talking to me.  Tempting me with their words of adventure and excitement and far off places.  It has been a real test of wills.  Me writing and doing NaNo or picking up one of the many alluring books that has been staring at me with bedroom eyes, saying read me, read me, read me.  Now, Now Now.

Thank god NaNo is over and I can get stuck in and read something other than my own writing.

Now the only hard decision is deciding which one to start with first…

The twelve : a novel / Justin Cronin.

"Survivors of a government-induced apocalypse endure their violent and disease-stricken world while protecting their loved ones; while a century into the future, members of a transformed society determinedly search for the original twelve virals."

Okay the decision is probably not that hard since I have been looking forward to 'The Twelve' since it was first announced.

The first book in the series, The Passage, took the world by storm and was one of the books of 2010.  (see blogpost Vampires and Bad Boys)

I will probably re-read just to re-familiarise with everything that has happened and to wallow in its goodness.

"An anthology of tales which explore the lives of teens raised after a catastrophe, either in the first few years after the change or in the distant future."

You may or may not have noticed that I have a thing for doom and gloom and gritty fighting-for-your-life-while-the-world-goes-to-hell kind of novels.

I'm not sure what that says about my psyche but dystopia and apocalyptic fiction fills this niche quite nicely.

The cover alone was enough to make me want to pick it up.

The disciple of Las Vegas / Ian Hamilton.

"Hired to recover $50 million in a land swindle, Ava has her work cut out. Tracking the money to Las Vegas she finds herself caught up in an illegal gambling ring where the stakes are high and an old enemy is out for revenge."

I enjoyed the previous book The deadly touch of the tigress so I was very pleased and surprised to accidently come across this new Ava Lee novel.

I so enjoy female characters who hold no prisoners but also use their brains.  Maybe it's because I'm such a wuss but smart, tough, kick ass women are what it's all about.

Protection / G.J. Moffat.

"Logan Finch has got his toughest job yet - protecting convicted serial killer Chase Black.  But did Black really do all the things they claim?  Finch isn't so sure and soon finds himself caught between his duty to a client and the instinct to survive the increasingly deranged individual that wants him dead."

I love getting my teeth into a good crime novel and this book came highly recommended to me courtesy of another staff member.  Sharing books with others is one of life's pleasures and a great way to increase an already large pile of wanting to read books.

The dead of winter / Lee Collins.

"Cora and her husband hunt things; things that shouldn't exist. When the marshal of Leadville, Colorado, comes across a pair of mysterious deaths, he turns to Cora to find the creature responsible, but if Cora is to overcome the unnatural tide threatening to consume the small town, she must first confront her own tragic past as well as her present."

A another crime, another kick ass, take charge kind of woman.

The blurb and the cover both got my attention and though I'm not much of a Western fan this twist to the genre sounds just like my kind of thing.

"An official behind-the-scenes reference for the six-time Emmy Award-winning series' third season provides individual character profiles and the inspirations behind them while placing key storylines in a historical context."

Yes I'm a Downton Abbey fan (like so many others) so this book was bound to get my attention.

Even better is the news that there is a season 4.  What will happen next?  Will we hear the patter of little feet?  Will Maggie Smith have more marvellous one-liners?  Will Isis the dog finally have an episode of her own?

One can hardly wait.

"In the town of Kingsbridge during the middle of the twelfth century, the lives of those who are working to build the most amazing Gothic cathedral in the world become entwined through their ambitions, loves, and tribulations."

It's not just books that have been piling up.  My dvd viewing has also been on hold (at least for most of the part).

I've been wanting to watch this mini-series for ages and finally it has arrived along with World Without End, the sequel, both courtesy of friends overseas.

All I need now is a weekend and for the weather to turn to crap and I can sit and indulge in a mammoth watching session.

"Charming con man Neal Caffrey escapes from a maximum security prison, only to be recaptured by his nemesis, FBI Agent Peter Burke. With few options, Caffrey agrees to help bring down other elusive criminals in exchange for his eventual freedom. But before long, Caffrey finds himself playing a game of cat and mouse with those who want him back in prison."

A new discovery for me and one which I have slowly been catching up with at the end of each day after hours of NaNoing.

It's been the perfect antidote to my NaNo addled brain; light, breezy, with eye-candy to boot and even better I now got 3 seasons to work my way through to my hearts delight.

LOVE the cover for After. That on its own is enough to make me want to read it, let alone the tasty dystpoian/apocalypse subject.
