Bloggity, blogging, bloggers...

I have a confession to make.

I am an addict.

Now don't get all excited. My addiction is nowhere near as scandalous as booze, drugs or sex. I am not a celebrity after all.

My addiction - make that addictions - are fairly mundane. There's my addiction to books (do I really need to explain this one) and chocolate (Hello it's chocolate, need I say anything more...) and Scifi television (go figure). My latest addiction is a rather odd one, though understandable given the direction my life has taken in the last few months.

I have become addicted to reading blogs and I blame it entirely on MJ, Tosca, Scriven and my other fellow bloggers. (Picture of me giving you all a firm stare over the rim of my glasses).

I could of course say it was all entirely in the name of research (which would be partially true) but really it's just a fascinating and very addictive and easy way to pass the time. There are some truly great blogs out there and some that are so bad that they are almost good, if you know what I mean.

One of the wonderful things about being a blogger is that there is also a small chance that you may get seen by a publishing house and pick up a book contract.

So here's a salute to my fellow bloggers who are out there in the big wide world, slaving away at their computer, wondering if they will ever have a life.

Power to the people! (a chocolate fish to anyone who can guess which tv show this was from).

Just a geek : unflinchingly honest tales of the search for life, love, and fulfillment beyond the Starship Enterprise / by Wil Wheaton

As a character on Star Trek the Next Generation he was pretty forgettable (through no fault of his own).

In the last few years though he has become the King of the Geeks. It's a title he has earned not just through his numerous guest appearances on a variety of tv shows or even through his gaming skills. He has earned it mostly through his blog and other online media writing.

He was one of the first to put himself out there, long before it was fashionable and has carried on from strength to strength, promoting and talking about the world of online media.

All Hail to the Chief

Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell

Another early blogger, Julie Powell started her blog on the premise of following in the path of Julie Child's classic book 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking'.

Her attempt at undertaking all 524 recipes makes for an interesting and humorous read.

The pioneer woman cooks : food from my frontier by Ree Drummond

We've all dreamed of being swept off our feet by a tall handsome stranger and some of us are fortunate enough to have this happen to them.

Ree Drummond was one such woman and her blog followed her life as a city girl turned cowgirl. From the blog grew several books and her own tv show on the Food Network.

Just goes to show what a redhead can do when she puts her mind to it.

Style Yourself: Inspirational advice from the world's hottest fashion bloggers

Truthfully I can't imagine being a fashion blogger.

The idea of taking pictures of myself in various outfits and posting them on the Internet fills me with utter terror. Luckily for me (and the world) I am, as my partner sometimes tells me, a fashion nightmare so the chances of me being a fashionado and setting the trend for millions is completely zero. (thank god).

For those though who do like to be inspired by what the average Jane then is the book for you.

Drunk, divorced & covered in cat hair by Laurie Perry

We've all heard about the mad cat lady. You know the one. Single, living alone, drinking wine and talking to her cat.

When Laurie Perry found herself in this situation in her thirties she decided to do something about it.

Her solution?

Take up knitting and write a blog chronicling her experiences as a newly single woman. What happened next? Well you have to read the book to find out.

The book of awesome : snow days, bakery air, finding money in your pocket, and other simple, brilliant things by Neil Pasricha

I love books like this. Books that celebrate all the small and wonderful things that make life worth living. Some of the things in this book will completely surprise you and others you will totally relate to.

Either way, it is filled with reminders of the simple pleasures in life and a perfect pick-me-up for when you're feeling less than awesome.

Confessions of a scary mommy by Jill Smokler

I'm not a mommy as such.

Having a 23 year old, 6 foot tall stepson who can bench press his own body weight (and more) pretty much shatters that illusion.

This book though is still joyously funny as Jill Smokler expands on her blog and gives a honest and at times frightening take on what it means to be a mom.

Forgotten bookmarks : a bookseller's collection of odd things lost between the pages by Michael Popek

Like alot of 'bookie' people I have a thing about books about books. Not just books either but libraries and reading and well anything that relates to books. You would think I get enough in my day job but the sad fact is that books are probably my biggest addiction of all.

I love books and this little book shows that I'm not the only one that is captivated by all things bookie.

I'm waiting for Let's pretend this never happened, the new (mostly true) memoir from the inimitable Blogess, Jenny Lawson.

@Scriven - THANK YOU for this post! Well, thank you AND curse you because I've seen a couple titles I'd never heard of before. Who doesn't want to read Drunk, divorced and covered in cat hair? I'm doing it just for the title :)

@Sally - Read Jenny Lawson's book and laughed until I cried/laughed until it hurt. Found her blog by accident a couple years or so ago on a bus ride back from training staff in writing/submitting book reviews for our (then) website. Laughed so much I scared fellow co-passengers.

I am definitely addicted to reading blogs as well. Something that really opened my world up was finding Google Reader; best thing ever.

I now have some new blogs to add to it including this blog, Jenny Lawson's and Laurie Perry's and I have requested their respective books. I figure if Lawson’s book made @tosca laugh until she cried then it's definitely a book for me.

:)
