Today is the 150th birthday of Warkworth War Memorial Library. Many happy returns (or in the words of a former Warkworth Community Librarian "All the best").
We had our official Cake Cutting Ceremony with guests Deputy Mayor John Kirikiri, Councillor June Turner, representatives from the Rodney District Council and the Rodney Libraries, some of the local schools and members of the public, including local authors and a descendant of one of our early Librarians H B Moore. Northern Libraries Manager and Warkworth Community Librarian, Gail Dallimore put the library's personal history into perspective by discussing world events that had taken place during it's life, from World Wars to Red Socks. She also related the life cycle of the library to the current Matariki celebrations. John Kirikiri acknowledged the important role of volunteers in our history and told us that he shares his birthday with us (Happy Birthday John).
Mahurangi College Kapahaka also performed for us and principal David McLeod spoke of the importance of the library and the close relationship we have the schools in the district. This is certainly also true of Warkworth Primary School who threw us their own birthday party yesterday, complete with a cake which we left for the children to enjoy after we enticed the teachers to put on a small show for us all to enjoy (that's it at the top of the page).
Tonight we are gearing up to prove that Librarians are smart in our community challenge. Results will be available tomorrow.
