Terry Deary's popular form of history telling has being taken, shaken and applied New Zealand by none other than internationally renowned author Margaret Mahy. And it is an absolute gem.Awesome Aotearoa: Margaret Mahy's History of New Zealand follows the history of the "adventurous country". It is filled with funky facts ("In 1814 in the Bay of Islands the price of a musket was eight pigs and 150 baskets of potatoes"), great illustrations, limericks, a talking snail who helps fill in the gaps.
Margaret Mahy manages to poke fun at almost all parts of our history, but still addresses those issues that go to the core of where New Zealand is today. Deservedly shortlisted for several of the New Zealand books awards this year, I am sure that this title will prove popular for readers, both young and old.
