There's a nifty little poem that acts as a reminder about how many days each month has. This website celebrating Leap Year has 69 versions of it (as at February 2008).
Why have a leap year at all? It's a long and complicated explanation according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Basically the calendar that was in use was diverging from actuality and the powers that be decided something needed to be done. It's a fascinating story.
