Last chance to visit the Worlds Largest Floating Bookshop

My excuse for trolling around the message boards of different internet sites (including Trade Me and Face Book) is that you come up with all sorts of interesting information you wouldn't know about otherwise. This is one of the things I found and this weekend is your last chance to visit before it leaves our waters.

Doulos is the World's Oldest Active Passenger Ship with the world's largest floating bookshop and is currently in New Zealand for the first time in nine years. It has been here since 10 June 2008 and is due to leave on after Monday 30 June 2008.

Built in 1914, two years after the Titanic, the Doulos has welcomed aboard over 20 million visitors for tours, programmes and visits to the floating book fair, with over 6000 titles of quality books in a range of genres. With stops in over 500 ports of call, this unique ship has visited more than 100 countries. It is staffed by an international crew of 320 volunteers from over 50 countries and is owned by a Christian charity, working mostly in the developing world to provide good educational literature at cost to people.

This is the Doulos' third visit to Auckland, the last being in 1999. It will also be the last ever visit, as the ship is due to retire. You can visit over the weekend from 2pm to 10pm. The Doulos is berthed at Princes Wharf, 143 Quay Street in the Auckland CBD.

Last days of Book Sale

There is still time to nip into the Orewa Library today and tomorrow to pick up a bargain book. Whether it is something light to lie back and enjoy on the beach in the fabulous summer we are having (it just seems to be going on and on) or something to sink your teeth into for when the weather gets colder, there is something there for everyone.

I have just talked to Liz at Orewa and she assures me there are still plenty of boxes in reserve including some audio books, heaps of childrens items (remember the school holidays are coming up) and things for mum and dad as well. Head along and check it out at the Orewa Library Book Sale before it finishes tomorrow afternoon.

Book Sale Now On

For all those book lovers and collectors out there, as well as everyone else who loves a bargain, don't forget that the Whangaparaoa Book Sale is NOW ON. And there's plenty of time for you to have a good look through all the books as it is on until Saturday, running from 9am to 4pm each day. Its on Level 4 of the Whangaparaoa Plaza (opposite the Post Shop).

Just a quiet word on a personal note. Please be considerate of other people at the sale and the volunteers who are running it and putting in lots of hard work for a good community cause. A couple of quite agressive traders spoilt the experience for one of the volunteers at Warkworth last week. A smile can go a long way.

More and more books

on sale for your summer holiday reading (or for reading on days like today when the weather isn't good for anything but curling up with a good book).

The little birdie reported in from out West to let me know that the Kumeu book sale is on Saturday 1st December at the Art Centre (behind the Library) from 10 am to 3 pm. It is a joint Rodney Libraries - Art Centre project.

Meanwhile, this weekend you will find a Book Sale as part of the Red Beach School Gala. Orewa Library is supporting the school with their annual fundraiser. Crossed fingers for good weather for this Sunday 18th December. [oops! That should be 18 NOVEMBER. rodneylibraries 15/11] Wander along and join in all the fun.

Sounds like there are lots of places that I will need to stay away from as my book shelves at home are already bulging and I could quite easily have a book sale of my own.

The Book Sales are coming

It is a sad fact of life in a library that sometimes the old and unused books have to be moved out to make way for all the new ones that are being published and that you want to read.

Here in Rodney we partner up with different community or school groups to run sales of these items - so that you get the benefit thrice over. You've read them in the library, you get to buy them for a ridiculously small amount in the sale and you get to support a community group or help to fundraise for a school team. Any way you look at it - You are the winner.

Book Sales coming up are:

Warkworth - Mahurangi College Hall Saturday and Sunday 24th and 25th November

Wellsford - At the Library on Saturday 1st December - the day the Santa Parade hits the town.

A little birdie whispered that there may be something over at Kumeu soon as well. I will let you know more when I get the official word.

Ka kite ano - this librarian is off to play hookie at the World Netball Champs. Go the Silver Ferns.
