Personally I just don't get the whole Twilight thing and just by saying this I can hear the cries of a million fans who will most likely think I am completely and utterly bonkers.
How could I not like Twilight?
It has everything any self respecting Syfygirl should love. There's vampires and werewolves and the whole star-crossed love that generally appeals to a closet romantic like myself. Still it all somehow leaves me feeling well... a bit... empty.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate Twilight. After all any book that gets people interested in reading has got to be a good thing, so I'm all for that and on some level I want to like it, I really do.
And it's not because of the vampire thing either, because I actually quite like vampires. They are for me the ultimate bad boy and perhaps that is the problem. The vampires in Twilight just don’t have that bad boy appeal.
Vampires who sparkle in the sunlight?
Really?
I'm sorry, vampires need to “burn baby burn” at the mere touch of daylight and if they don't they better have a bloody good reason not to and sparkling is definitely off the agenda.
Of course I’ve always had a thing for bad boys. Not in real life of course (been there, done that) but in the world of fiction give me a bad boy any day. These men are sexy, passionate, slightly aloof and completely and utterly ruthless. They don’t conform to the rules of society nor do they let anything stand in their way. They take what they want, when they want it and don’t we just secretly love them for it.
Jane Austen certainly knew their appeal as did Charlotte Bronte and two hundred years later these bad boys are still luring us in.
So if you like vampires or bad boys or a little bit of both here are some of my picks
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
This isn't a vampire book and Valek isn't a vampire. What he is, is a cold blooded assassin who is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure obedience and loyalty from those that work for him.
His latest protege though may just prove to be harder to control than he realised.
Continues on in Magic Study and Fire Study.
The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko
Completely hidden and unknown to the humans that surround them the supernatural battle between Light and Dark has been going on for a millennia.
One man could tip the balance either way especially when a woman is involved.
Followed by The Day Watch, The Twilight Watch and The Last Watch.Let the right one in by John Lindqvist
When a lonely boy discovers that the face of evil isn't always worn by a monster and that a monster isn't necessarily evil how far will he go in the name of friendship.
The Passage by Justin Cronin
“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born.”
When the unthinkable happens FBI agent Brad Wolgast and 6 year old Amyl flee the carnage as civilisation collapses. Brad will do whatever it takes to protect the little girl that is now in his care.
Amy though has a much harder road to travel than he could ever imagine.
Soon to be continued in the forthcoming sequel The Twelve (due for release Oct 2012).Red, White and Blood. by Christopher Farnsworth
Nathaniel Cade is a secret agent like no other. Ruthless and deadly he rarely fails to carry out any assignment that is given to him.
People fear him and with good reason because Cade is no ordinary secret agent, he also happens to be a 200 year old vampire...
This is the latest in this series so start with Blood Oath and then continue on with The President's Vampire
The Greyfriar by Clay & Susan Griffith
Described by one reviewer as 'Zorro with vampires' this is an alternative history novel where vampires have taken over the Northern Hemisphere leaving humans to live in the South.
The war though isn't over and a young woman finds herself a target of the vampires. The only thing standing between her and them is the mysterious Greyfriar, a hero to many who fights against the vampires.
Continues on in The Rift Walker.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Angel might have been the romantic hero in this series but for me Spike was the one.
Pale and pasty he might have been but with his long leather coat, black t-shirt and cigarette clasped firmly in hand he knew how to live… and how to kill also. Now this is how a vampire should be.
On a side note I actually met the actor who played him some years ago and he was not only funny and talented but an absolute sweetie.
The Vampire Diaries
I haven’t read the books and I had a take-it-or-leave attitude about the tv series until the DVD of the 1st series came into my hands.
With low expectations I decided to give it ago. One weekend and vast amounts of chocolate later I had not only watched all 22 episodes but I had my new vampire bad boy, Damon Salvatore. Talk, dark and 'he can bite my neck anytime' this vamp embodies all the qualities that a bad boy needs.
Other TV bad boys you may like to try on DVD are: True Blood (Erik), The Tudors (Charles Brandon) and Lost (Sawyer).

Spike>Angel yes!
I love Poison Study because Yelena is just as much of a bad-ass as Valek. Plus in my mind he's super hot.
I heart three inclusions on this list: Lukyanenko's books (really liked them and have seen the film adaptations, too), Spike from Buffy and, of course, Vampire Eric Northman *fist pump* I've never read or watched Vampire Diaries. I see all the ads and pull a face but, over the last couple weeks or so, I've felt myself giving in little by little :)
