Chair of judges, Michael Portillo, commented:"With a notable degree of consensus, the five Man Booker judges decided on their longlist of 13 books. The judges are pleased with the geographical balance of the longlist with writers from Pakistan, India, Australia,Ireland and UK. We also are happy with the interesting mix of books, five first novels and two novels by former winners. The list covers an extraordinary variety of writing. Still two qualities emerge this year: largescale narrative and the striking use of humour."
The judging panel for the 2008 Man Booker Prize for Fiction is: Michael Portillo (Chair), former MP andCabinet Minister, Alex Clark, editor of Granta; Louise Doughty, novelist; James Heneage, founder of Ottakar's bookshops and Hardeep Singh Kohli, TV and radio broadcaster.

What's On this weekend

It's looking like it is going to be another one of those weekends where I check my supply of candles and batteries. I have netball all weekend so the dryer will be doing overtime on Saturday night so I have dry stuff to wear on Sunday (hopefully the power will stay on this week).

A lot of sports have semifinals and finals coming up. I know Wellsford Rugby Club are hoping for a big crowd at Centennial Park tomorrow for their semifinal against Horohoro. The U15's have a semi there in the morning, followed by the reserves and then the seniors so get out your gumboots and raincoats and go along to support them.

A couple of things postponed last weekend are on this weekend, including the Puhoi Markets which are on Sunday from 9am. The Food Show is on all weekend at the ASB Showgrounds at Greenlane. If I didn't have sports commitments, that's where I would be heading.

If you see any sun this weekend, head outside and get your Vitamin D fix. Catch you on the other side. Stay safe.
